“Illegal guns and gun violence pose a serious threat to the livability of our city,” said Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey. He said the eidemic of gun violence is not going away. In 2008 alone, police said they have taken 531 illegal guns off the street. They said 114 of those guns had been in the hands of minors. Committee members said law enforcement officers are doing the best they can, but leaders need to attack the roots of the problem. “The people who need help, they need jobs, they need opportunities and they need a different lifestyle,” said City Councilman Frank Brown. “The bottom line is that it’s easier to get a gun on the street than it is to get a job,” said Councilman Jim Suttle. Talking points of interest: Why is it easier to obtain a gun in North Omaha than to get a job? Where are the guns coming from? Why are our minors able to purchase these guns? Why is it the responsibility of the “leaders to attack the roots of the problem”, where are the elected officials, government and the police department.?
